Artist Of The Week: Q&A With Basement Revolver

Hi MBC fam and welcome to our second week of the Artist Of The Week: Q&A series.

Chrisy Hurn who is the vocalist and guitarist of Basement Revolver reached out to me recently, to have a listen to her band’s music and the possibility to publish their music on my blog.

Basement Revolver consists of the three members Chrisy Hurn (vocalist/guitarist), Brandon Monroe (Drums) and Nimal Agalawatte (Bass/Synth) who are from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Their genre is a mixture of Alternative/Indie Rock, Post-Rock, and Shoegaze.

Their music takes me back to the 90s with bands such as Garbage, Super Jesus, and Killing Heidi just to name a few.

So glad she reached out because this band is so talented!!!

And if you don’t believe me, check out their latest single below.

Basement Revolver – Johnny Pt.2 (Audio)

Johnny Pt.2 is from the upcoming EP “Agatha”. It is a continuation from their previous EP “Johnny”. Agatha is due for release 21st July 2017.

To find out what the song is about, well you just have to read this exclusive interview to find out ;)

Chrisy talks about the band, past experiences, life, the meaning behind their latest song and album and what’s next in store for the band in the coming months etc.

Please welcome my special guest Chrisy!!

Please tell the readers who are and where you’re from?
Chrisy: We are from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

How old were each of you, when you knew you wanted to become an artist?
Chrisy: I was probably around 13 years old when I learned the guitar because I wanted to write songs.

Who was your inspiration, to get into music?
Chrisy: I am honestly not sure. I just started writing songs when I was thirteen, not really sure what brought it on.

What has been the biggest highlight throughout your career to date?
Chrisy: I think it has just been the ability to open for some bands that have meant a lot to us. One big one was when we opened for “We are the City”. Overall, just the fact that we get to keep making music is a highlight.

From your experience in the music industry, what kind of advice would you give to other artists who want to get into the industry?
Chrisy: To be honest we are just figuring it out for ourselves. Just keep working hard, and be kind - there is nothing worse than arrogance.

Your latest EP “Agatha”, what was the process? And which song is your favourite?
Chrisy: The process is different for every song. Sometimes, songs come out of jamming with the full band (those are usually the best songs) and sometimes they come out of going through my old poetry notebooks. It is hard to pick a favourite because every song on the EP has been important to me for different reasons.

Johnny Pt.2 is the new single off the EP, what is the meaning behind it?
Chrisy: Johnny Pt. 2 is a continuation of Johnny. I wrote it when I was trying to move on from our breakup. There was still a lot I wanted to say and writing was the best way that I knew how to.

Your EP is to be released next month, what should the new and current fans expect?
Chrisy: Expect something a little different from last time, but not too different. All I can say is that we feel more confident in our sound than we used to and we are really happy with the outcome.

In the coming months, what should we look forward to?
Chrisy: A lot of things are in the works right now, most of them are secrets at this point, but expect to hear from us :)

And, what would you like to say to your fans?
Chrisy: Thank you so so much for your support. We wouldn’t be anywhere without you, thank you for listening, sharing, and being excited about our music. We honestly are so thankful.

Thank you so much, Chrisy, for taking the time out of your busy schedule and for being a part of this awesome series.

Artist of the Week: Q&A With Said The Whale

Tyler Bancroft who is one of the founding members of Said The Whale reached out recently to share his band’s new music and thought why not do a Q&A to discuss the band, their music, and the process of making the album etc.

Said The Whale is an indie rock band, that consists of three members; Tyler Bancroft, Ben Worcester and Jaycelyn Brown who are from Vancouver BC, Canada.

Check out the band’s new single and video “Confidence”.

This is a relaunch of the single as Tyler combined his first project P’ARIS with Said The Whale. The meaning of the song is explained in this exclusive interview!!

Here are some of their other hits.

Said The Whale – Step Into The Darkness

Said The Whale – I Will Follow You ***NEW***

To know more about the band, head to the link below.
https://www.facebook.com/pg/saidthewhale/about/?ref=page_internal

It’s sure to be a hit worldwide. The song Confidence is fresh, crisp, and catchy and has such a positive message and vibe, which is sure to relate to each and every one of you. And their album “As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide” is such a great album. It tells a story from track one and ends the chapter on track 10. All meaningful songs and it sure is a must buy. Which you can purchase now on ITunes and you can listen to the album on Spotify.

Please welcome my first artist of the series Tyler from Said The Whale.

Please tell the readers, who you are and where you’re from?
Tyler: I’m Tyler speaking on behalf of the band Said The Whale from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

What is the meaning behind the group’s name “Said The Whale”?
Tyler: Unfortunately, no cool story here! Just a name that we liked at the time and are now stuck with ;)

How old were you, when you knew you wanted to become an artist?
Tyler: Just Tyler here, but I can tell you that I was about 8 years old when I tried to play an Elvis Presley song on my dad’s guitar, but instead of fretting the notes I just tuned each individual string to the note I wanted to hear. I broke 3 strings, possibly cried, and immediately signed up for piano lessons because piano strings are hidden and rarely snap on you.

I’ve been a fan of your first project P’aris where you released a few years ago “Confidence”. You have relaunched this amazing anthem with your current band “Said The Whale”. What does this latest song mean to you?
Tyler: Thank you! This song is quite meaningful to me, although the lyrics are fairly abstract and shrouded in poetry. I wrote this song about a close friend of mine who was about to become a father. I remember asking him if he was scared to become a parent and he said “no”, which shook me up a bit. I couldn’t imagine not being afraid of being responsible for another human life. In a twist of fate, I myself am now a father, so this song has taken on a whole new meaning in the past year.

You have a great album called “As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide” that was released in March 2017. What was the process in making it? And which song strikes a chord, when performing live?
Tyler: This was a very fun album to make. There was a lot of spontaneous creativity in the studio, a lot of the songs got stripped down to their core and rebuilt. It was our first time working with an outside producer, which was extremely rewarding for us. Live, I would say the track “Miscarriage” is quite impactful. It’s a song that tackles very heavy subject matter, obviously, and so it’s quite an emotional performance usually, and that seems to connect with audiences.

Throughout your career to date, what has been the most challenging? And what has been the most rewarding?
Tyler: Being in a band is constantly challenging. There are times when everything feels like a struggle – writing, recording, touring, and essentially running your own small business. But all of it feels worthwhile when you play shows to people who care. It’s an incredible feeling.

In the coming months, what should we expect?
Tyler: We’d like to be on the road as much as possible this year. Our band exists in its purest form when touring and playing live, so we want to really embrace that.

And what would you like to say to your new and current fans?
Tyler: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

What a great insight, thanks, Tyler and thank you for being a part of the Artist Of The Week: Q&A series.
