Please welcome my first artist of the series Tyler from Said The Whale.

Please tell the readers, who you are and where you’re from?
Tyler: I’m Tyler speaking on behalf of the band Said The Whale from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

What is the meaning behind the group’s name “Said The Whale”?
Tyler: Unfortunately, no cool story here! Just a name that we liked at the time and are now stuck with ;)

How old were you, when you knew you wanted to become an artist?
Tyler: Just Tyler here, but I can tell you that I was about 8 years old when I tried to play an Elvis Presley song on my dad’s guitar, but instead of fretting the notes I just tuned each individual string to the note I wanted to hear. I broke 3 strings, possibly cried, and immediately signed up for piano lessons because piano strings are hidden and rarely snap on you.

I’ve been a fan of your first project P’aris where you released a few years ago “Confidence”. You have relaunched this amazing anthem with your current band “Said The Whale”. What does this latest song mean to you?
Tyler: Thank you! This song is quite meaningful to me, although the lyrics are fairly abstract and shrouded in poetry. I wrote this song about a close friend of mine who was about to become a father. I remember asking him if he was scared to become a parent and he said “no”, which shook me up a bit. I couldn’t imagine not being afraid of being responsible for another human life. In a twist of fate, I myself am now a father, so this song has taken on a whole new meaning in the past year.

You have a great album called “As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide” that was released in March 2017. What was the process in making it? And which song strikes a chord, when performing live?
Tyler: This was a very fun album to make. There was a lot of spontaneous creativity in the studio, a lot of the songs got stripped down to their core and rebuilt. It was our first time working with an outside producer, which was extremely rewarding for us. Live, I would say the track “Miscarriage” is quite impactful. It’s a song that tackles very heavy subject matter, obviously, and so it’s quite an emotional performance usually, and that seems to connect with audiences.

Throughout your career to date, what has been the most challenging? And what has been the most rewarding?
Tyler: Being in a band is constantly challenging. There are times when everything feels like a struggle – writing, recording, touring, and essentially running your own small business. But all of it feels worthwhile when you play shows to people who care. It’s an incredible feeling.

In the coming months, what should we expect?
Tyler: We’d like to be on the road as much as possible this year. Our band exists in its purest form when touring and playing live, so we want to really embrace that.

And what would you like to say to your new and current fans?
Tyler: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

What a great insight, thanks, Tyler and thank you for being a part of the Artist Of The Week: Q&A series.
